In addition to UN forces, there are Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot, Greek and Turkish troops posted along the buffer zone that divides the island. Both the 8,000-strong Greek Cypriot and 4,000-strong Turkish Cypriot armies rely heavily on conscripts.
